Bank Holiday is official public holiday in the UK and Commonwealth countries. By the way this is incorrect name for public holiday. Let me explain.

It is not compulsory for every employer to give their employees day off work. It all depends on the contract you have with your employer, although banks close and the majority of the working population is granted time off work. This public holiday is always on Mondays.

The name Bank Holiday comes from Bank Holiday Act which was introduced in 1871. It is incorrect name for public holiday which is passed on for generations. It used to be just for bankers to take day off work this is why it was introduced.

Today, this name is incorrectly used for public holidays which are not officially bank holidays, for example Good Friday and Christmas Day.
